A Reflection on Steve Jobs’ Address

Life of Steve Jobs is such a long road that most of us want to look back. His experiences can also be an inspiration for our lives. When he delivered his speech towards the graduates, I want to personally sit, listen and feel what is really happening in that event. An event which is very life turning because you have already graduated from college. Through his speech, there are some lines that I really liked and these are:

  • You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards

. With these statement, I have come to realization that you are not looked for what you can do for tomorrow but for what have you done in the past. The things we believed in and probably with the things that happened and learned in the past affect our decisions. The consequences are unto us. When we look forward, the paths or lines were not settled yet, it is still in broadcast. However, when we backward trace, we can connect the dots and realize what were the factors and instances that related the present.

  • The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being beginner again

. Steve Jobs have gone through ups and downs. In his career, he co-founded the Apple Inc. which started only in a garage with Wozniak. Then after ten years he was fired, bought the NeXt but didn’t reached success because of more than $9000 computer, created the Pixar Animation Studios bought from Lucas which is the most successful animation studio in the history then NeXt was bought by Apple which led him back with the company he started, the Apple. In the movie ‘Pirates of the Silithcon Valley’, Steven Paul ‘Steve’ Jobs started developing computers in a garage with his friend Stephen Gary ‘Woz’ Wozniak and luckily some angel investor like Mike Markkula Jr. invested in starting Apple Inc. with a quarter million dollars. But by the year 1986, Jobs was fired from Apple from being layed-off from being the head of the Macintosh Team and sold his stock in the company. From scratch, he called being fired in Apple a ‘success’ for it realeses the heaviness of being successful and gains the lightness of being a beginner again. The money he earned from the sold stocks at Apple was his start to the NeXT. Jobs ran NeXT with an obsession for aesthetic perfection, as evidenced by such things as the NeXTcube’s magnesium case but it didn’t came to success for it was very expensive. Later, he bought the Graphics Groups which was renamed to Pixar and had a contrat with Disney to produce animated films. The first animated film was the ‘Toy Story’ which was shown at year 1995, it took 4 years to complete the film but it was an incredible success when shown. Apple later bought the NeXT for $400,000,000 which led Jobs back to the company he co-founded with a small stake. At that time, Apple was in terrible economical status that led t the alliance of the Microsoft and Apple.

  • You’ve got to find what you love.

And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Doing the things that you really like will motivate you. But, if haven’ still found it; keep looking it is just somewhere needed to be loved. Working with passion will probably have great results. The only things that keep us going is thing that we love to do. For an instance of a student studying BSIT in Institute of computing, he/she must be consistent and persistent towards studies, and try not to waver. Keeping up a good work might be tiring because people around you puts pressure unto you and expects higher. Living up to these thing are tiring unless it was really your will. However, keeping a good work would rather be an example to others that they might make you there standards and when all stands up, you are standing out of the crowd. Be Patient with everyone, but above all be patient of yourself. In these times, you shall carry all of your courage and strength to withstand the storm. Don’t be uprooted from the storms, face it and feel the sweetness and blessings of your life. Nothing should be perfect for it is only the time that most people turn to God.

  • Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.

Some people tend to trend their lives with others. Don’t let others put and look you down. Try not to live up to others expectations that make you feel bad. Live life to the fullest. Stress no more. Having worries will just make you age. Stresses are also the one responsible thing why people have illness. Everything will start difficult so why worry. Before you master something, you must try it first and understand how it goes. Just think of the best you can do for now and leave the rest hanging. No one knows what lies ahead of us except God. Maybe tomorrow we are already dead. Life is like that. Death is destination we all share.

  • Stay hungry. Stay foolish.

In his speech towards the graduates, he just wants to relay to aim high ang think beyond the box. . “No one knows what he can do until he tries” by Publilius Syrus. Trying is not merely trying but it is an action where your heart is. If there’s a will then there’s a way. It’s just a matter of courage and action. I think a person can do anything if he will just put his heart and mind into it. Being hardworking is a thing to achieve and attain success so keep believing in your self that you can do it. . “To infinity and Beyond”, a tagline of Buzz Lightyear from the animated film Toy story which tells us to hold on beyond what we can reach. Why settle for little? While you can have bigger.

The three stories that is shared in the commencement is his personal and life experiences for us to view and see that life has great horizons and great valleys that we may take as we were going towards our goal, mission and vision. Sometimes life hits’ your head with a brick ao you need awful tasting medicine to recover.
