Pirates of Silicon Valley Review

Steve Jobs has gone through ups and downs. In his career as a technopreneur, he co-founded the Apple Inc. which started only in a garage, bought the NeXt but didn’t reached success because of more than $9000 computer, relieved the Pixar Animation Studios bought from Lucas and being back with the company he started, the Apple. In the movie ‘Pirates of the Silicon Valley’, Steven Paul ‘Steve’ Jobs started developing computers in a garage with his friend Stephen Gary ‘Woz’ Wozniak and luckily some angel investor like Mike Markkula Jr. invested in starting Apple Inc. with a quarter million dollars. But by the year 1986, Jobs resigned from Apple from being layed-off from being the head of the Macintosh Team and sold his stock in the company. From scratch, he called being fired in Apple a ‘success’ for it releases the heaviness of being successful and gains the lightness of being a beginner again. The money he earned from the sold stocks at Apple was his start to the NeXT. Jobs ran NeXT with an obsession for aesthetic perfection, as evidenced by such things as the NeXTcube’s magnesium case but it didn’t come to success for it was very expensive. Later, he bought the Graphics Groups which was renamed to Pixar and had a contract with Disney to produce animated films. The first animated film was the ‘Toy Story’ which was shown at the year 1995, it took 4 years to complete the film but it was an incredible success when shown. Apple later bought the NeXT for $400,000,000 which led Jobs back to the company he co-founded with a small stake. At that time, Apple was in a terrible economic status that led t the alliance of the Microsoft and Apple.

Through this situations, Jobs earned successes and failures. Back when Jobs was just out from bud, he was described as being an erratic and temperamental manager or being unpredictable. In a business, a manager or owner must know how to handle his or her employees for they’re the one that feeds you and you are the one that feeds them in terms of paramount production, it’s like having mutual benefits or symbiotic relationship. Many heads are best than one. Having a twisted personality may affect the employees on how you control and take people around you in your system. In our previous class discussions, having self-mastery is essential. In being a successful technopreneur, one must have the high emotional quotient and adversity quotient and does not need high intelligence quotient. In Steve Jobs situation, he made intelligence quotient higher than the emotional quotient that led to gaps and abusiveness to its employees and developers. In the said movie, he fired a software developer because he slept in the office for 52 hours straight work and it was really drastic in the part of the developer. The second situation that he showed his twisted personality is when he denied his paternity to Lisa Brennan that led to a loss of an opportunity of being Time Magazines’ Person of the Year award at that time. His failures include also his wrong competence towards others potential competitors. By the prototypes of first Macintosh sent to Bill Gates, Jobs was wrong in this decision, he doesn’t know that Gates is also a great artist that steals (the idea of mouse). Jobs was so desperate in crushing down his thought greatest competitor IBM but unfortunately closest to him is the one that stabbed him deeply who is Gates. But the most talked issue about Steve Jobs in the movie is how he handles his self and his employees.

Despite the crisis that Jobs encountered, Jobs successes are enumerable than to his failures. The start of Apple with Wozniak is alone a success. But Jobs considered his resignation to Apple at the year 1985 to be his greatest success in life. His successes may have caused because he does what he loves to do, being a drop out in college just to make a computer is such a big sacrifice for me when it was during that time. Computers and other technology were not that widely used during that time that the risk rate of taking the wrong path was high but since it is his passion, it took him to fame and success. He is also always seeking for perfection, when he sees the perfection beyond the imperfection his artworks it is just like your seeing something that is not real. He was so hungry for perfection and success that he made his self more greedy of success. When Jobs sold his stock at Apple, he founded NeXT but had minimal success and bought the Pixar and had a contract with Disney in making animated films. Through his new begginings, he began to reconstruct his life. But since Apple bought NeXT, Jobs was back again in Apple with new innovations. Perseverance towards to Jobs work played a vital role. With his perseverance in developing new technology and his seek to perfection, he was able to go beyond the box that made farther away from the box. Before there was only black and white screen but through him, a graphical user interface of computers was introduced and was very successful in the market. Thorugh him also, he was able to put the hands away from the keyboard and put it more in the mouse because you just click the thing in the screen and then you can open it already. He was successful in combining the mouse of the Californian engineers and Graphical user interface through his Macintosh. Jobs Confidence banged the people around him. Thorugh him, he was able to drag John Sculley from Coca-cola to Apple as President. Jobs just asked John, “are you just going to sell sugared water or join me and change the world?”.

Truly, Steve Jobs played a big role in technopreneurship in the world. His successes and failures led other future technopreneurs to be able to see what lies ahead of them, the consequences they might have with their decisions and the things they might develop for the new spread and talk.

When I entered the depths of Information Technology course, thinking of going abroad and a larger amount of money there was my orientation upon myself. I kept to myself that no progress would I ever have when I am in Davao or Philippines because of employment discrepancies. Davao City is the largest city in terms of land area and just with this advantage, investors and businessperson should be convinced to invest in Davao. This investment might involve technology models; through this, it might be called technopreneurship. Technopreneurship is, by a large part, still entrepreneurship. The difference is that technopreneurship either is involved in delivering an innovative hi-tech product or makes use of hi-tech in an innovative way to deliver its product to the consumer or both. Technopreneurship is the entrepreneurship involving the technology itself. The entrepreneurs in a technopreneurship system were called technopreneurs. Technopreneur comes from 2 words Technology and Entrepreneur. It means a business that using technology as their business model. This term only used by Asian countries especially Malaysia and Singapore. A technopreneur distinguishes logic from tradition, a tradition from prejudice, prejudice from common sense and common sense from nonsense while integrating a variety of ideas from diverse groups and disciplines[1]. The most famous of them all is Bill Gates, who makes Microsoft a household name all over the world. Steve Jobs – well known for his innovations. iPod – most carried gadget by young population. Look at the success of Google – brainchild of Sergey Brin and Larry Page. Who doesn’t know Google? These technopreneurs surely created jobs for our fathers and mothers who doesn’t have any income resources, for the employees who don’t have pleasing personality and currently hired employees but not satisfied with their salaries. Last summer, I found a site that gives you an opportunity to work in your very own time or you can work full time using only a computer and internet connection. This site is the oDesk.com, it caters individuals and group work. It allows you to earn dollars while you are just in your very own home, seating in front of your very own computer working as much as you want. What you have worked is what you get. Job vacancies were listed in a manner that you can find easily where you can find your strength. Job vacancies were categorized into web development, Software development, Networking and information systems, writing and translation, administrative support, design and multimedia, customer service, sale and marketing, and business services. The administrators of the site earn their money by ads and through 10% payments each transaction made within the site.

From the descriptions and expectations from a technopreneur, I would like to see myself creating and providing jobs to others to help lower the unemployment rate especially here in Davao where I was born and make opportunities be common to the individuals. Everyone experienced to be a baby that needs care and help and eventually will grow into a more mature person that even helps others to stand at their own feet. Starting small but thinking big. Businesses just start like that, small to medium enterprises are very common as of today making them work hand in hand. Maybe someday, I can find a way to my heart to put up a business in Davao City. Initially, I was thinking to go abroad for a couple of years and make savings then put up a business here in Davao. However, it never reached to the extent putting a technology-modeled business. My parents are selling Construction materials like gravel, sand and hardware supplies so I was just thinking to keep the legacy that my parents might pass upon to me because that is what my parents have introduced to me as a source of income. However, when I was getting more involved with the style and orientation of technopreneurship, I started to ask myself on what do I do with my knowledge I gained at the University of Southeastern Philippines? Will it just rust and be put aside and not be improved? Through this reflection, I was able to distinguish on what must be put aside and must be done. I won’t let the approximated 4 years of hardships in school, in this university be gone with the wind. I might (might) be giving employment to people who are unemployed and at the same time harness my ability through exposure at the real techie world. Each entrepreneur especially the technopreneurs dreams to be a successful one like Bill Gates and Steve Jobs but in every success, there is a failure behind it but instead taking failures as a failure, you can take them as steps to success. Acceptance to one’s weaknesses is an asset. As what i have experienced as a small-time entrepreneur, jealousy to others might drag you down. Instead of focusing on your own business, you might try to destroy and imitate others. I am not saying that imitating is bad but being different is something that differs them from you. As what Steve Jobs said, “It is better being a pirate than joining the navy”. Business expansion was also my dream for our business. I want it like to be a convenience stores that it is just around the corners and beyond the corners or just have many retailers. Hunger is one of the most potent forces in this world! It is as powerful as death because if not satisfied, it causes a fatality. If well channeled, hunger brings about the desires of your heart that it drives you to achieve extraordinary things. Being a risk taker is also a factor that helps a technopreneurs progress up. If Mike Markkula was not a risk taker, would you think that there would be an Apple today? Or There would be iPhones and iPod? Or the simplest, there would be mouse and graphical user interface?

Putting my feet on the shoes of technopreneurs, I can see a persistent and hungry technopreneur. From childhood, being an employee for a long period of time must not be on my biography if God may allow. Since before, I was just thinking to be an employee for experience and saving period only in my life. Being the boss is really the best!(tested and proven)

Steve Jobs has been great in his path he took. He changed the world’s trends and talk in his low beginnings and high thinking. In his career as a technopreneur, he co-founded the Apple Inc. which started only in a garage, bought the NeXt but didn’t reached success because of more than $9000 computer, relieved the Pixar Animation Studios bought from Lucas and being back with the company he started, the Apple. With the success he owned, many admired him and much jealous of him. Bill gates had been jealous to him and his works also. Many admired him with his iPhones and iPods that demonstrates advance technology. However, many had intrigued and brought him down like when he was banged with the talk that iPods are not environmentally safe that its disposal are hard but as a solution he announced that when they want already to dispose their iPods they may send it to us for free.

All my life, i am already exposed with the entrepreneurial world that the competition is tight and harsh. My purpose in going to school is to earn something and use it to make my own. My parents’ business is one of my options.

Steve Jobs career path is long and never-ending since technology will always be in progress. I would take same path as Steve Jobs took in terms of his persistency, will, passion and hunger for success. I will not cease to improve and innovate. These good assets of Steve Jobs are his strength to overcome the failures he encountered. His good points drew him to impossibilities and possibilities. He made his little things into standards of others in developing new things.

Steve Jobs though had been erratic and unpredictable which cause the people around him to be confused and be pressured for nothing. He made others fear him. Jobs’ ways in improving is sometimes wrong like when he abused his employees by working more than the usual working hours. In a business, a manager or owner must know how to handle his or her employees for they’re the one that feeds you and you are the one that feeds them in terms of paramount production, it’s like having mutual benifits or symbiotic relationship. Many heads are best than one. Having a twisted personality may affect the employees on how you control and take people around you in your system. Ths is the thing that I want to improve when I am already starting my own business.

I would take partly of Steve Jobs path and be out of path sometimes because I also want to be different and unique. I want to be known for what I am and not whom I imitated. It’s just like i the paterns of each individual’s fingerprint, the fingerprint alone shows how God made you different from others. Being unique is great. Imitative people are known but later forgotten. People like Steve Jobs and Bill Gates were successful in their separate paths. Steve Jobs was busy making great things and Bill Gates was busy making money so that made me admire Steve Jobs becuse he cared on things he made and made it at its greatest quality he could do have done. Bill Gates is currently the wealthiest person in the world and its because he was busy making money. However, he is also cared about his works but I have seen Steve Jobs do more than Bill Gates. Joy and passion towards work is one want I really want. But no one knows what lies ahead of them, one must make every best decisions he can and lose nothing. “There are those who work all day. Those who dream all day. And those who spend an hour dreaming before setting to work to fulfill those dreams. Go into the third category because there’s virtually no competition.”

But no one knows what lies ahead of them, one must make every best decisions he can and lose nothing. “There are those who work all day. Those who dream all day. And those who spend an hour dreaming before setting to work to fulfill those dreams. Go into the third category because there’s virtually no competition.”
